BED CARE

Every effort has been taken whilst building your new bed to ensure that it will provide you with excellent comfort and support for years to come.  Your new bed may feel differently from what you have previously been used to and it may therefore take a period of time for your body to become accustomed to the different comfort and support level that your new bed offers.

Do not fold or roll your mattress.  This will damage the frame and/or the spring unit contained within the mattress.

Do not jump on your bed.  This will damage the springs and the base of the bed.

Harrison pocket sprung mattresses are heavy.  We advise that you seek assistance to turn, spin or move the mattress.  Handles are provided to assist with this but they should not be used to carry the mattress for any lengthy distance.

Mattresses featuring warm and cool sides are identified by the label on the bed.  The warm side of the mattress is the label side and the underside of the mattress is the cool side.

Harrison pocket sprung mattresses are hand built and are deliberately made shorter than the base to allow for the thickness of a headboard and bedding. By their very nature, they will vary slightly in size.  During transportation, your mattress may contract.  After a short while in use it will relax to its normal length.

The Revolution pocket spring system contained in your mattress is by its very nature designed to contour to the shape of your body. In the same way, the springs follow the contours of the base upon which the mattress sits. If you have purchased a mattress only, it is therefore important to ensure that the base is sound. If you are using a slatted base, we recommend the use of a base board if the slats are more than 75mm apart.

If you are using an old base, this may appear to be in good shape initially, but you should consider whether this will last another ten years or so. If the base is damaged in any way, this could have a detrimental effect on your mattress.

If your bed base has drawers, be careful not to overload them with bulky or heavy items.  For transportation purposes, drawers in our bases are held in place by a piece of fabric which is stapled to the underside of the bed base and the inside of the drawer.  Please remove this piece of fabric to enable the drawers to move freely.  When removing the fabric however, ensure that all staples used to secure the fabric are also removed using caution as these can be sharp.

Tufting ensures that the upholstery layers in your mattress remain in place.  Under strain, tufts can snap.  In the unlikely event that this should happen, contact your retailer who will arrange to have the tuft replaced in your home.

We strongly recommend the use of a mattress protector or under blanket. Mattresses need to breathe so avoid using a plastic sheet as this will lead to damage through condensation. It is a good idea to air the mattress regularly.

Use a soft brush to remove dust and fluff from your mattress. Never use a vacuum cleaner. Stains and spillages should be absorbed using a dry cloth or paper towels. If you need to sponge the mattress, do so only with a damp cloth and the mildest solution of soap and water.

Harrison mattresses are upholstered using the finest quality fillings such as Cotton, Egyptian Cotton, Wool, Hempure, Cashmere, Silk etc. These fillings will tend to settle over the first few weeks or months. Do not worry if hollows appear in the sleeping areas of your mattress. This is caused as a result of the fillings compacting under body weight. This is quite normal and is not a fault.

Gradually, all the fillings will compress to a near even level over the entire mattress surface. Following the turning/spinning instructions will aid this process.

Traditionally designed mattresses should be turned as frequently as possible preferably once a week for the first 12 weeks as follows:

  1. Start with the label on the mattress at the foot end and spin the mattress through 180 degrees so the label is now on the top of the mattress under your pillow
  2. After a week, turn the mattress over completely so the label is now on the underside of the mattress at the pillow end
  3. After a further week, spin the mattress through 180 degrees so the label is on the underside of the mattress at the foot end
  4. After a further week, turn the mattress over completely so the label is on the top side of the mattress at the foot end (the original starting position).

Thereafter:

Mattresses with warm and cool sides should be set with the appropriate seasonal side upwards and spun 180 degrees monthly. The mattress should be turned over twice a year to coincide with the seasons.

Mattresses without the warm and cool sides should be turned monthly repeating each stage of the initial 12 week cycle as detailed above.

Turn free mattresses

If you have purchased a Memory Tailor Mattress or a Topped & Tailored Mattress with a single sleeping surface (this is identifiable by the bed label), your mattress needs to be spun through 180 degrees weekly for the first 12 weeks and monthly thereafter.

Turn free zip & link mattresses

When rotating a turn free zip & link mattress please ensure that both mattresses are spun together so that the labels are always at the same end of the bed and zips remain aligned.

Thank you for reading these notes. Following these simple guidelines will ensure your mattress stays in prime condition and that you enjoy greater comfort and a better night’s sleep.
